Award Categories

This year, there are thirteen categories recognising consultants, contractors, architects, clients and projects, as well as innovation and sustainability.

All will be hotly contested and highly prized by the winners, who will be celebrated at the Awards Dinner on Tuesday 14 November 2023.

Contractor of the Year

  • Quality of design and construction
  • Client engagement and satisfaction
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises a main contractor that has demonstrated outstanding work in the Scottish education sector. Please include examples to showcase the quality of your work and include at least 1 client testimonial. 

Early Learning & Childcare (ELC)

  • Quality of work produced
  • Demonstration of positive impact on the user experience (inc. pupils, staff, community, parents etc)
  • Client engagement and satisfaction
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises excellence and innovation in the briefing, design, development and delivery of ELC facilities in a community setting to ensure that children get ‘the best start in life’, focusing on innovation in meeting the ‘quality of experience’ for early learners through the creative use of space, and learner led experiences.

Technology: Transforming Learning, Teaching and the Curriculum

  • Demonstration of positive impact on the user experience (inc. pupils, staff, community, parents etc)
  • Client engagement and satisfaction
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises innovation in the briefing, design, development and delivery of learning and teaching by using technology to provide equity of education provision in the 21st century. Please include examples to showcase the quality of your work and include at least 1 client testimonial. 

Innovation in Delivering a Sustainable Learning Space

  • Quality of project(s) examples
  • Meets the brief in demonstrating ‘sustainable learning’
  • Demonstration of positive impact on the user experience (inc. pupils, staff, community, parents etc)
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided
  • Supporting evidence of Carbon and Energy performance

This award recognises sustainability practice across all levels of decision making in existing and new build learning spaces to support improved performance of the key spaces, and more user-driven sustainable behaviours.

Client of the Year

  • Quality of project example(s)
  • Evidence of passion, collaboration and innovation
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises the passion, direction and innovation that a nursery, school, college, university or local authority has shown in either a new build or refurbishment project to ensure clear alignment of the education and community objectives across all stages of decision making.

Architectural Practice of the Year

  • Quality of work produced
  • Evidence of delivering value
  • Client engagement and satisfaction
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises an architectural practice which has demonstrated excellence in translating the needs and expectations of Scottish learning and teaching policy ambitions into designs for learning spaces and places which meet the needs of users, innovate to meet future needs and functionality, provide inspiration and deliver value to clients. Please include examples from the last 18 months to showcase the quality of your work and include at least 1 client testimonial. 

Consultancy of the Year

  • Quality of work produced
  • Client engagement and satisfaction
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises a multi-disciplinary or construction consultancy company (including building and quantity surveyors and project management companies) that have a proven track record of delivering/helping to deliver outstanding education projects in Scotland. Please include examples from the last 18 months to showcase the quality of your work and include at least 1 client testimonial. 

Inspiring Learning Spaces

  • Meets the brief in demonstrating inspirational space/s
  • Demonstration of positive impact on the user experience (inc. pupils, staff, community, parents etc)
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises innovation in the creation of inspiring spaces across learning stages, in existing and new build spaces, that help support and promote new and different ways of learning/teaching and can be easily replicated across the learning estate.

Pupil/Student Experience

  • Meets the brief in significantly improving the pupil/student experience
  • Client/user engagement and satisfaction
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided

This award recognises a learning establishment which has undertaken a buildings/facilities investment that significantly improves the pupils/students’ learning and social experience and positively enhances their health and wellbeing.

Project of the Year

  • Quality of work produced
  • Demonstration of positive impact on the user experience (inc. pupils, staff, community, parents etc)
  • Client engagement and satisfaction
  • Quality of entry and supporting information provided
  • Supporting evidence of Carbon and Energy performance

This award recognises an ELC setting, school, college or university new build project which provides exemplar demonstration of a number of principles of Learning Estate Strategy principles and transferrable lessons for other projects. Entries must clearly state the client, the architect(s) and contractor(s) involved and consultant(s). Photographs should be labelled to indicate where they were taken. 

Project of the Year - Inclusive Design

  • Overall quality of the design and construction of the project
  • Supporting evidence of meeting the needs of pupils and students with additional support needs
  • Pupil/student, teacher, parent or family member engagement and satisfaction
  • Supporting evidence that a project was carried out ‘with’ young people’s involvement
  • Supporting evidence of Carbon and Energy performance

This award recognises a project that meets the needs of pupils and students with additional support needs. Entries must clearly state the team involved and need to include at least 1 testimonial from a pupil/student, teacher, parent or family member.

Refurbishment of the Year

  • Quality of work produced
  • Demonstration of positive impact on the user experience (inc. pupils, staff, community, parents etc)
  • Client engagement and satisfaction

  • Supporting evidence of Carbon and Energy performance

This award recognises an ELC setting, school, college or university refurbishment project that has made a difference to the educational or research experience. Please explain clearly what difference was made and include before and after photographs.  Entries must clearly state who the client was, the architect(s) and contractor(s) involved and consultant(s).

Supplier of the Year

This award recognises a supplier that has demonstrated outstanding work in the education sector.

Please include examples from the last 18 months to showcase the quality of your work and include at least 1 client testimonial. 

The judges will be marking the following criteria out of 10:

  • Innovation
  • Client engagement and satisfaction
