Closing Keynote: Creating natural learning places for the young Parisians

20 Nov 2024

To address heatwave vulnerabilities, the city of Paris initiated the "OASIS" schoolyard greening program. Openness, Adaptation, Sensitisation, Innovation and Social Ties: since 2017 this program aims to design and transform the schoolyards in Paris into green oases accessible to both the school pupils and local communities. Schoolyards, which in the City of Paris are typically sealed spaces, were chosen as potential green cool areas due to their presence and equal distribution in all neighbourhoods and the proximity to potentially vulnerable communities.

Through co-design and coordination with users, the new schoolyards are more climate resilient, providing a healthier and more engaging learning environment, and socially inclusive.
