James is a Director at Bennetts Associates, one of the UK’s leading architectural practices known for its pioneering work in sustainable design. With over two decades of experience, James has played a central role in delivering award-winning higher education projects across the UK, collaborating closely with universities to create spaces that foster learning, inclusivity, and innovation.
James leads design teams with a deep commitment to environmental performance, user experience, and architectural integrity. His portfolio includes landmark projects for institutions such as the University of Edinburgh, University of Aberdeen and Manchester Metropolitan University. He is particularly interested in how academic buildings can adapt to the evolving pedagogical and environmental demands of the sector.
James brings strategic insight and hands-on expertise to discussions about the future of higher education estates, combining design vision with practical understanding of how to deliver transformative, low-carbon environments that support academic excellence.
James is a visiting critic at a number of UK architecture schools, a consultee to the Scottish Futures Trust, a former Trustee of Edinburgh Printmakers and is active in supporting the wider discussion on architecture, low carbon design and the built environment through industry groups, events and talks.
