Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools: guidelines and guardrails

This session will focus on the Scottish Guidelines and Guardrails for the Use of AI in Schools and their role in supporting the safe, ethical and effective use of AI in education. It will provide an overview of the guidelines and guardrails, including the context for its development, the collaborative approach taken by the Scottish Government and EIS, and the five core principles that underpin it.​‌

Following this, a panel of practitioners, researchers and education stakeholders will discuss the guidance from a range of perspectives, reflecting on its development and the considerations it raises for schools. The discussion will explore the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of AI in education and consider how schools, local authorities and practitioners could use the guidelines and guardrails to inform decision-making as they navigate an evolving technological landscape.

As AI becomes an integral part of education, schools must ensure it is used safely, responsibly and effectively. This session explores both the future of AI safeguarding in Scottish schools and the practical use of AI tools through the Gemini for Learners pilot in Glow. Delegates will gain insights into leadership, governance, classroom practice and learner wellbeing, with practical examples to support the development of safe, inclusive and AI-ready schools.

This session explores how Chalk Access, a tool being developed with support from the Scottish Government through CivTech, can support teachers to find and implement evidence-based strategies to support the needs of their students. Chalk Access gives every teacher instant access to the right strategies for every learner, and gives ASN coordinators a real-time overview of needs, provision, staff assignment and evidence across the school.

Come along to this exciting show and tell session that will be led by teachers and learners who are involved in the Gemini for Learners pilot within Glow. They will provide insights and feedback regarding the use of Gemini Education and NotebookLM from classroom experience. Hear examples of what works and what doesn’t work. Find out how AI literacy skills have been developed to identify misinformation and use AI appropriately to support learning.

Through exploring Canva for Education and Magma Maths, this session will showcase how these platforms can support improved outcomes, foster creativity, and enable more effective teaching and learning.

We also believe that when technology is chosen deliberately, used purposefully, and governed properly, it expands what is possible for every child, especially those who would otherwise go without.

This is not a defence of screens. It is a defence of children — all children, in all schools, and in all circumstances. And it is a challenge to anyone who believes that the answer to flawed technology use is no technology at all.
